Our intelligent power switch has developed some problems and we'll need to reboot it. We'll do this Tonight at around 1900. All machines connected via this power switch will need to be turned off beforehand so we'll have an outage of 10 to 20 mins in all our services.

Tomorrow, Oct. 29, 2011, evening starting at 1900/7 PM (local time, UTC+2), our main server will receive more memory, bigger disks and a higher OS version. We estimate ~4 hrs work. During this time, the machine will be turned off a few times for short periods of time.

Our oldest server (web, ftp, afp) was unreachable Tonight from ~Midnight to 0400 (local time, UTC+2). We have solved the problem and the machine is running again without problems.

Our main server has been experiencing crashes (afp-, web, cms and ftp services) lasting from a few mins to 1/4 hr for the last 3 weeks. We think we have isolated the problem and will replace/upgrade RAM and the OS accordingly in the next few days.

This morning, we encountered errors on the boot disk on our main server. Therefore, we will switch to a backup disk this afternoon. Because of the necessary reboots, there will be short interruptions in web, cms and ftp services.

Last night from 0015 to 0430, our mail server was unreachable for normal mail client programs as well as for webmail. Mails could neither be sent nor received during this time. It took us this long to notice and solve the problem because our monitor program that checks all connections regularily went on strike as well last night.

Due to an attack from outside our network one of our web servers went down. We managed to nurse it through the afternoon but it did crash in the evening. The machine is running again and we are following up on the problem of the attack that hasn't given up yet.

Spammers have managed to break the password of one of our customers mail account Yesterday, and they made a spam run using that mail account that landed us in the Spamhaus Blacklist. We have changed the passwort and we are in the process of getting us out from that blacklist.

We would like to urge you to check your passwords and change them if necessary. A mail password should be at least 6 characters long and it should contain letters as well as digits and/or other special characters (eg. #$%&*) and it should not contain words like names or birth dates, etc..

All of you using the mail control panel can change your password using that or you can always just ask us by mail to change your password(s) for you.

A week ago, a new mail server software was installed at Bluewin in which this error was meant to be fixed. Since that day, we've been sending all mails to Bluewin via the normal route again and it does seem that the error is fixed.

Dieser Fehler trat seit dem Gebrauch des "Ausweichservers" nicht mehr auf (inzwischen 7 Tage). Bitte die früher hier angegebene Adresse nicht mehr brauchen.

The problem is not fixed yet and we are still in contact with Bluewin concerning this error. Last week, it was reported to the manufacturer of the mail server software used at Bluewin with the necessary documentation collected by us. Also, Bluewin has arranged for an alternative way of sending mails to them for the mail providers affected.

The error hasn't happened anymore since using the alternative server (7 days ago). Please delete the special mail address we had created for the purpose of reporting this error.

Since our last mail a few days ago, we have seen progress on 2 sides. One is that we do seem to make progress in dealing with Bluewin, the other is the better understanding of what provokes this error in the first place. We can't prevent the error but we can react and fix the problem on a temporary base after it occurs. This will lower the no of incidents per day quite a bit. To be able to do that we do, however, need your co-operation.

We have kept a special log for the last few days that shows all connections with bluewin.ch and bluemail.ch in detail. These logs were analysed and the results were sent to Bluewin Today.

We are one step further in that the Bluewin support agrees with us that this problem will occur or has, unnoticed, already occurred in connections to other mail providers as well.

Wir müssen Ihnen leider mitteilen, dass nach beinahe einer Woche täglichem telefonieren mit der Firma Bluewin, teilweise mehrmals täglich, der Fehler weiterhin besteht. Inzwischen haben wir eine offizielle Beschwerde aufgegeben und das Problem wurde bei Bluewin als dringlich gekennzeichnet und wird intern eskaliert.

Da nicht alle Mail server bei bluewin.ch von diesem Problem betroffen sind, besteht eine gute Chance, dass ein Mail beim 2. oder 3. Mal schicken durchgeht.

Unfortunately, we have to tell you that after almost a week of daily talks to Bluewin, the problem still exists. In the meantime, we have submitted an official complaint and the priority of this problem was bumped to urgent and it will be escalated internally.

As not all mail servers at bluewin.ch are affected by this error there is a fair chance that a mail will go through at the 2nd or 3rd try.

As some of you have found out already, there is a problem sending mails to bluewin.ch accounts. Most of the mails are refused with the error
501 5.5.2 MAIL FROM syntax error

We are in contact with bluewin to find the cause of the problem and how to fix it and we will get back to you as soon as we know a bit more about it. What we know as of now is that one of the bluewin servers that accepts incoming mails seems to have a problem that shows up as refusing mail sent to it.

Layer 1: Maschinen abstellen, Abbau Rack, Fahrt nach Glattbrugg: ab ca. 15 Uhr bis 17 Uhr
Die Maschinen werden gestaffelt abgestellt, der Mail Server zuletzt

Glattbrugg, InterXion: Zutrittsberechtigungen, Rack und Maschinen einrichten: ca. 17 Uhr bis 20 Uhr

Maschinen starten und testen: ab ca. 20 Uhr
Die Maschinen werde gestaffelt wieder hochgefahren; die Mailmaschine sollte als erste wieder online sein

Während dieser Zeit sind alle Service (web, ftp, cms, afp, mail) unterbrochen..

After yet another power loss at the Layer 1, we decided to move all our machines to the InterXion datacenter in Glattbrugg. This move will take place next Wednesday, July 11, 2007.

The schedule is as follows:
Layer 1: power off of all machines, pack up rack plus machines, drive to Glattbrugg: ca. 1500 to 1700
The machines will be powered off 1 by 1, the mail machine will be last

Glattbrugg, InterXion: organise access, install rack and machines: ca. 1700 to 2000

Power on and test of the machines: starting ca. 2000
The mail machine will be powered on first

All services (web, ftp, cms, afp, mail) are interrupted during this time.

Was die genaue Ursache dafür war, wissen wir nicht, aber heute nacht wurde die Hauptsicherung des Gebäudes ersetzt.

For the third time this month - and the 2nd time we were affected - there was a power cut at Layer1.

Unfortunately, we don't know the cause for the power cuts but Tonight, the main fuse of the building was replaced.
